Masai Mara Safari Rates: What You Pay and Why They Vary
Masai Mara safari rates are the per person prices you pay to visit Kenya’s most famous reserve. They run from about $150 a day for shared camping to $1,000 or more a day at top camps. For a 3-day road safari from Nairobi, shared camping tours start near $350, a private budget trip starts around $650, mid-range lodges in peak season land near $1,100 to $1,300 per person, and luxury camps pass $2,000.
A rate is never one number. It is a park fee, a bed, a vehicle with a guide, and a list of extras, all multiplied by your dates and your group size. Once you know the pieces, you can estimate the cost of a Masai Mara safari yourself and spot what a quote leaves out.
We organize safaris from Nairobi, so we price trips from these same building blocks. The sections below give the ranges for each piece, a worked budget you can copy, and a clear list of what is usually included and what costs extra.
Why Masai Mara safari rates vary so much
Masai Mara safari prices vary because every trip bundles five separate costs, and each one can double on its own. Those costs are park fees, accommodation, vehicle and guide, season, and group size. That is why two honest quotes for "three days in the Mara" can sit $1,000 apart.
Why one safari is quoted at $350 and another at $1,500
A budget 3-day tour with six people in one van and a basic camp can cost about $350 per person. A similar 3-day trip with luxury accommodation reaches $1,500 per person, and peak-season luxury camps go higher. Both visit the same reserve and see the same animals. The difference is the bed, the vehicle, the guide and the date.
Here are the levers in rough order of impact:
- Accommodation tier. It is around a third of a mid-range package and more than half of a luxury one.
- Season. July to October costs far more than March to May.
- Group size. A solo traveler carries the whole vehicle and guide cost.
- Road or air. A return flight from Nairobi adds several hundred dollars.
- Park days. Every extra day in the reserve adds a daily fee.
There is no single Mara price, only a price for your dates, your bed and your group size.
Why the Mara costs more than other Kenyan parks
Park fees explain much of the gap. The reserve used to charge non-residents about $80 per adult per day. Since 2024 the published fee is $200 per adult per day in the second half of the year, and $100 in the first half. Park fees now make up roughly 30% of a typical package.
Logistics add the rest. The reserve is a 5 to 6 hour drive or a short flight from Nairobi. It holds some of Africa’s densest wildlife, and the camps inside it operate in a protected ecosystem with a limited number of beds. Demand peaks during the wildebeest migration, and rates follow.
Self-drive offers no way around this. In 2024 the Narok County government, which oversees the reserve, announced that private and rental cars driven by their renters would no longer be allowed in. You need a licensed operator and driver-guide, so the guide cost is part of every price you will see.
How to estimate your Masai Mara safari cost
You can estimate any Masai Mara safari cost by adding four lines: park fees, accommodation, vehicle and guide, and extras. Then divide the shared costs by the number of travelers. It takes ten minutes and gives you a benchmark for every quote you receive.
The four-line formula
Use this order and keep each line separate:

- Park fees: fee per adult per day × number of park days.
- Accommodation: full-board rate per person per night × nights.
- Vehicle and guide: daily vehicle rate × days ÷ number of travelers.
- Extras: balloon flight, village visit, drinks, tips, flights to Nairobi, visa and insurance.
The ranges for each line come from the sections that follow. For the example below, we used $200 and $100 park fees, a mid-range lodge at $250 per night in peak season, a budget camp at $100 per night, and a 4×4 Land Cruiser at $275 per vehicle per day.
Worked example: three days in the Mara
The trip is 3 days and 2 nights, by road from Nairobi, with two park days. Everything is full board and the figures are per person, before extras and tips.
| Scenario | Accommodation | Park fees | Vehicle share | Total per person |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple, mid-range lodge, peak season | $500 | $400 | $413 | $1,313 |
| Four travelers, mid-range lodge, peak season | $500 | $400 | $206 | $1,106 |
| Four travelers, budget camp, January to June | $200 | $200 | $206 | $606 |
| Solo traveler, mid-range lodge, peak season | $500 | $400 | $825 | $1,725 |
Two things stand out. A group of four saves $207 per person over a couple, purely by splitting the vehicle. A solo traveler pays $412 more than a couple for the same lodge and the same days. If your fee schedule adds 18% tax, add $72 per person to each peak-season park fee line, and $36 to the January to June line.
Split the vehicle four ways and the same trip costs about $200 less per person.
Park fees: the fixed part of every Mara safari
Park fees are the one cost you cannot negotiate. Non-resident adults pay $100 per day from January to June and $200 per day from July to December under the schedule published since the 2024 increase. Your operator pays these on your behalf, but they sit inside the price you pay.
Current non-resident fees
Some published schedules show the fee plus 18% tax, so ask which figure your quote uses.
| Period | Fee per adult per 24 hours | With 18% tax |
|---|---|---|
| January to June | $100 | $118 |
| July to December | $200 | $236 |
Children pay a reduced rate, and Kenyan citizens and residents pay much lower rates in shillings with proof of status. Fee schedules change, so confirm the current figure with your operator before you pay a deposit.
How the 24-hour clock affects your bill
The ticket covers 24 hours from the time you enter. Timing therefore decides how many park days you pay for. A trip that enters at midday on day one and leaves mid-morning on day three is normally billed for two days. A trip that wanders back in for an evening drive can trigger a third.
Ask how many park days are in the quote and when the clock starts. At the peak rate, one extra park day is $200 per person, or $400 for a couple. Travelers often assume fees are included and learn otherwise at the gate, so get the answer in writing.
Conservancies and the main reserve
Private conservancies on the edge of the reserve charge their own conservation fees. These are usually built into the camp’s nightly rate, and the conservancies limit how many vehicles enter. Your sightings tend to be quieter there, and the nightly price is higher.
Count park days, not nights, because the fee is charged per 24-hour block.
Accommodation: the biggest swing in the price
Accommodation is the single largest line in a Masai Mara safari price, and it decides most of the gap between a budget and a luxury quote. Nightly rates are per person on a full-board basis, and they rise sharply from July to October.
What each tier costs and what you get
These figures are rounded from ranges that camps and operators publish. Individual camps vary, and some top-end rates already include park fees.
| Tier | Typical rate per person per night | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Camping and basic camps | $30 to $100 | Small tents or simple rooms, often shared bathrooms, buffet meals |
| Mid-range lodges and tented camps | $150 to $400 | Private bathroom, proper beds, reserve-edge or in-reserve locations |
| Luxury tented camps | $300+ low season, $600+ peak | Larger tents, better food, strong locations |
| Premium camps | $550 to $900 in low to mid season, $800 to $1,200+ at peak | High staff ratio, prime sites near river crossings |
| Ultra-luxury | $1,000 to $2,500+ | Private vehicles, very small guest numbers |
Our own accommodation is basic camping, luxury tented camps or lodges, depending on the budget. Meals are mostly European-style buffets with African influences. Because food is included at full board, drinks are the main extra.
Inside the reserve or on its edge
Camps inside the reserve cost more. They carry higher running costs and the overnight park fee is built into the rate. Camps on the edge are cheaper, and some sit only minutes from the gate, which keeps game drives short.

For most travelers the edge is good value. Inside the reserve you wake up among the animals, and that matters most to photographers and to people with only one night.
Sharing rooms and travelling with children
Two people sharing a room pay less per person than a solo traveler in a single room. Children under 12 usually get a reduced rate, and toddlers under 3 stay free at most camps. Ask each property for its own child policy, because it differs.
Choose the lodge tier first, then compare quotes, because the tier drives most of the price.
Transport, vehicle and group size
Transport is priced per vehicle, not per person, so the number of people sharing it changes your rate more than the vehicle type does. A Land Cruiser costs about $250 to $275 per vehicle per day, and the price is the same whether it carries one traveler or seven.
Road or air from Nairobi
The drive from Nairobi to the Mara takes about 5 to 6 hours. The road to the main gate is now paved, while tracks inside the reserve stay rough. The road trip is the cheaper way to arrive because the vehicle is already part of your package.
Scheduled flights from Wilson Airport take roughly 45 to 60 minutes, with stops depending on the route. A return ticket typically costs between $300 and $600 per person, depending on the airline and season. Flying suits short trips. For a 2-day Mara visit, a fly-in avoids spending 10 to 12 hours on the road, and advertised 2-day fly-in packages commonly cost $850 to $1,050 per person.
Tour van or 4×4 Land Cruiser
Both vehicle types have pop-up roofs for game viewing. Tour vans carry up to seven passengers and are the cheapest option. A 4×4 Land Cruiser is sturdier on rough tracks and usually costs a little more. We use either, and we suggest no more than 7 people per vehicle so everyone keeps a window seat.
Group size and the solo traveler
The driver-guide and vehicle together cost roughly $250 to $350 a day. Two people split that in half. Four people pay a quarter each. A solo traveler pays all of it, which is why private solo trips often start near $500 per day while a couple pays about $300 each. If you travel alone and your budget is tight, a shared group departure can work out cheaper.
Most of our safaris run privately with a minimum of two travelers. That keeps the vehicle share fair for couples, families and friends.
A full vehicle is the cheapest way to see the Mara, so fill the seats before you cut the lodge.
How season and trip length change the price
Season can move a Masai Mara safari price by 20 to 30%, and trip length scales the total almost in a straight line. Peak season runs from July to October, when the wildebeest migration is in the Mara. Low season falls in the rains, from March to May.
Peak, shoulder and low season
| Season | Months | Park fee (non-resident adult) | Effect on package price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peak | July to October | $200 per day | Highest lodge rates, limited availability |
| Shoulder | January to February, November to December | $100 per day in January and February, $200 in November and December | About 12 to 15% below peak |
| Low | March to May | $100 per day | About 20 to 30% below peak |
June is a transition month, with the lower park fee and rising demand. The saving in the low and shoulder seasons comes mainly from accommodation and park fees. Green-season roads can flood, and tall grass makes some animals harder to spot, but fewer vehicles share each sighting.
Timing the migration
The herds cross into the Mara from the Serengeti around July, and the dramatic Mara River crossings are most often seen in August and September. You are paying for that timing. If the crossings are your goal, book early, because camps near the river fill first.
For most other wildlife, including lions, cheetahs, leopards and elephants, the reserve delivers year-round. Many travelers who skip peak season still have excellent trips.
How many days to book
Three days is the practical minimum for a road trip, and four days with three nights lets you see the reserve at a relaxed pace. Each extra Mara night at mid-range peak rates adds about $450 per person ($250 lodge and $200 park fee), plus a share of the vehicle. At four people sharing, that share is about $69 a day.
If your time is short, book fewer destinations and spend more nights in the Mara. Moving between parks adds drives and rarely adds value on a first trip.
Two nights in the Mara usually beat one night in each of three parks.
What 3, 4, 5 and 7 days typically cost
Total safari prices fall into predictable bands by comfort level and trip length. Rates per person per day rise from roughly $150 for shared camping to well over $1,000 at the top end. Kenya-wide figures lean lower than the Mara, which sits at the expensive end.
Daily rates by comfort level
| Style | Typical rate per person per day |
|---|---|
| Shared group tour, camping | $150 to $180 |
| Private budget safari | About $300 |
| Private mid-range safari | About $400 |
| Luxury safari | $600 to $1,500 |
| Luxury plus | $1,500 and above |
These figures usually include park fees, lodging, meals, vehicle and guide. They do not include international flights.
How much a 3-day Masai Mara safari from Nairobi costs
A 3-day road trip typically costs between $350 and $1,500 per person, depending on comfort. The cheapest shared camping tours advertise roughly $200 to $350, and they put you in a crowded van with a fixed departure. A private budget trip with park fees included starts around $650.
Mid-range lodges at peak rates land near $1,100 to $1,300 per person, as the worked example showed. For luxury camps at $800 per night, the same trip costs about $2,400 per person ($1,600 lodging, $400 park fees, $413 vehicle for a couple).
Four, five and seven days
A 4-day trip adds a night and a park day. A fly-in 4-day package from an operator typically costs $1,260 to $1,785 per person. A 5-day road itinerary that also visits Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate or Lake Nakuru usually costs more per day than a Mara-only trip, because the extra parks carry their own fees.
Seven-day trips that add Amboseli and the Rift Valley lakes land in the multi-thousand dollar range for mid-range travel. Always ask how many of those days are in the Mara, since that is where the rate per day is highest.
Price a trip by Mara nights first, because that is where each day costs the most.
What is included in a safari price and what costs extra
A standard Masai Mara safari package covers transport, a driver-guide, accommodation, meals, bottled water, game drives and park fees. Almost everything else is extra. The best test of a quote is whether it lists inclusions and exclusions in plain words.
What a standard package covers
Most full-service Mara quotes include:
- Transport in a safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, with airport or hotel pickup
- A professional English-speaking driver-guide
- Full-board accommodation, with breakfast, lunch and dinner
- Bottled or mineral water during the safari
- Game drives as listed in the itinerary
- Park entrance fees, though not every quote includes them
What costs extra
| Extra | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Hot air balloon flight | $415 to $500 per person |
| Maasai village visit | $30 to $50 per person |
| Return flight, Nairobi to the Mara | About $300 to $600 per person |
| Soft and alcoholic drinks | Paid at the camp |
| Tips for guide and camp staff | Your choice |
| International flights, visa or entry authorization, travel insurance | Paid separately |
The balloon flight is the largest optional cost, and it is often worth it for one morning. Book it early, as slots are limited.
Questions to ask before you pay a deposit
A short list protects you from surprises:
- Are park fees included, and how many park days are in the quote?
- Is the fee shown with or without the 18% tax?
- Is the room price per person sharing or for a single room?
- How many travelers share the vehicle, and what is the seat limit?
- Which activities are included, and which are optional?
If any answer is vague, ask for it in writing. A clear quote beats a low one.
The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest trip once park fees and extras are added.
Laxa Trails rates and how booking works
Our packages sit in the budget to mid-range band, and each page lists its inclusions. Prices are in US dollars. Several packages also cover other parks, so the per-day figure is not a pure Mara rate.
Our packages side by side
| Package | Days | Listed price | About per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-Days Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha Budget Safari | 3 | $650 | $217 |
| 5-Days Big Five Kenya Safari | 5 | $1,460 (from $1,550) | $292 |
| 5-Days Lake Naivasha, Hell’s Gate, Lake Nakuru and Maasai Mara | 5 | $1,765 (from $1,800) | $353 |
| 6 Days Unforgettable Kenya Safari | 6 | $2,195 (from $2,315) | $366 |
| 7-Day Masai Mara Great Wildebeest Migration Safari | 7 | $2,446 | $349 |

The 3-day budget package includes park entry fees, a Lake Naivasha boat ride, bottled water and a Maasai village visit. The 7-day migration safari includes all applicable park fees and full-board meals, but excludes the balloon flight, drinks, tips and the village visit. Check the group size shown on each package page and ask for a quote for your party. We also offer a 2-day flying safari, a 3-day Mara and Naivasha safari and a 4-day migration safari.
How booking and payment work
An experienced tour consultant answers each enquiry and sends the details. To confirm a booking we ask for a 50 to 60% deposit by wire transfer. The balance is due at least 30 days before the safari, or it can be paid in cash US dollars on arrival.
International flights, visa fees, tips and insurance are not in the price. We strongly recommend travel insurance before you travel. If a package nearly fits, we can customize the destinations, activities and dates around your budget.
Compare per-day rates only between trips that visit the same parks and include the same fees.
Setting your budget with confidence
Masai Mara safari rates come down to five things: park fees, where you sleep, how many people share the vehicle, when you go, and how many days you stay. Add them line by line and you can predict any quote within a few hundred dollars. For a first trip, plan on $1,100 to $1,300 per person for 3 days at mid-range peak rates, or about $650 on a private budget trip.
If you want a number for your own dates and group, request a quote from Laxa Trails Safaris and tell us your budget, your travel month and how many people are coming. We will build the itinerary around it.
